gmtom@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•We Should Immediately Nationalize SpaceX and StarlinkEnglish1·15 days agoAfter Russia brutally suppressed their independence, then sent 10 million of them off to die to protect Russians. Which you keep wilfully ignoring.
Ukrainians didn’t want to be under Russian rule. It’s wild the mental gymnastics you’re doing to excuse Russia allying with Hitler himself to steal foreign land. So I’ll say again, the fact those regions were mistreated under Poland does mean it’s okay to invade them and colonise them.
Like you can find examples of time were colonial countries “”“liberated”“” foreign nations in much the same way, putting them under a different boot and treating them marginally better than the last guy. But if a colonial apologist gave you that argument you would (rightly) not accept it, would you?
gmtom@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•We Should Immediately Nationalize SpaceX and StarlinkEnglish1·16 days agoI took one look at you describing the “liberating” of Poland by the soviets because some of it belongs to different modern day countries and new you weren’t arguing in good faith. Invading another country and stealing their land doesn’t magically become “”“liberation”“” just because it was stolen by someone else first.
You can use this same logic to excuse the nazi invasion of certain countries as well.
gmtom@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•We Should Immediately Nationalize SpaceX and StarlinkEnglish1·16 days ago… only after they were betrayed by Hitler after they allied themselves with the Nazis to invade Poland.
And then raped and killed civilians in the countries they “liberated” by forcing millions of people from their Eastern European vasal states to die to protect the Russians.
Then replaced Nazism with a slightly different authoritarian system that opresses it’s people and performs ethnic cleansings, but has a red and gold cost of paint.
And then also exploited the global south, but just weren’t as good at it as the west, and filtered even more of what was exploited up the chain to the party leaders.
And tried to make up for that lack in ability to exploit the global south by exploring Eastern Europe.
Communist we’re allied with the nazis at the start of the war and as someone who’s great grandmother fled Poland to the UK to avoid being rapes and murdered by the red army, I will never forgive them for that.
gmtom@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•We Should Immediately Nationalize SpaceX and StarlinkEnglish1·16 days agoNo, we just hate people that glaze ruthless dictators and genocidal maniacs whose whole ethos was contradictory to the very idea of communism just because they had a red flag.
The problem is consistency.

Can anything be done about this? Me and my family are at wit's end82·20 days agoKeep calling the police. If they don’t want to do anything I’ve found that telling them if they don’t help you that saying something like “okay well me and my mates will ‘sort him Jim out’ ourselves” kicks them in to action.
I did something similar 2 years ago when I found the address of a guy who stole my bag. They didn’t want to help until I implied I might confront him myself, possibly with a weapon.
Tbf a normal arm bone wouldnt work with this effect very well, you need the bones to be wrapping around the outside and blocking the view of the bones on the other side. You can’t really make the 3d effect work a for a single/pair of bones in the centre of your arm and have it be visible on all angles of your arm.

gmtom@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why is it that the USA holds such power over the world now and not the UK who histrionically dominated most of it?5·2 months agoI don’t want to go into a big long thesis so I’ll try to summize.
America, now firmly cemented in its boarders, fully federalised and with a wealth of natural resources and ballooning population was becoming a big power by the start of the 20th century and American politicians were putting in considerable effort into undermining the big European powers, but especially Britain.
The British empire being so spread out made it hard to defend and control. So with Britain and it’s colonies fighting on every front for the whole length of the war Britain lost many colonial holdings in Asia.
Those colonies also paid a heavy price in the fighting and independent movements flourished after the war and Britain didn’t have the money or political will the fight them, so the empire dissolved.
America was able to use its war economy to massively ramp up its domestic manufacturing.
They were also able to use their position as financers and occupiers in Europe and Asia to extend considerable American influence to those regions. And also Latin America and the Caribbean. Giving American companies influence over much of the world without the obligations the British Empire had.

Like criticising that doesn’t negate the other stuff, but bring attention to the smaller mostly inconsequential stuff only serves to distract from the bigger problems.
