Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How would I pop a bag of popcorn without a microwave? English91·6 days agoIn the future, buy loose kernels in jars. They’re the cheapest popcorn in the store. For now you could just tear open the bags.
I don’t think this is challenging enough to NEED a glass lid but it does help of course. A metal lid will do. You can just go by ear. Once the popping frequency dies off, stop.
Avocado oil has a very high smoke point, you won’t reach it making popcorn. I’ll explain why. Add some to the pan. I use quite a bit, I like it better than butter so it’s the only fat I add.
Optionally buy the salts/fake butter combo flavor cinemas use. Sift it over cold pan to taste. Otherwise, use what you like for seasoning.
Turn the stove to max heat.
Dump in kernels.
Cover and wait until a small handful of kernels to start popping.
TURN OFF THE STOVE. The residual heat in the stove/pan will fully pop all your kernels without burning the earliest kernels to pop. Shake your pan gently now and then to get the kernels stuck in the already popped corn to drop back down.
That’s it!
Your senior aged family members just seem to suck but we only got a single sentence of detail.
Old people are not universally mean lol. Honestly it seems to me that almost every asshole I knew since a young age was an asshole in their childhood, teens, and adulthood so far. I figure that won’t change. There’s some exceptions, but it seems very hard to change personality.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are you best decluttering tips?English9·6 days agoOld stuff goes on the local buy&sell or eBay if it’s worth enough used. Otherwise it’s on the front boulevard with a spray painted FREE sign next to whatever I want gone. It’s very rare whatever I dump out there isn’t taken within minutes. Don’t hoard.
Shit tons of shelves and cabinets. Get stuff off the surfaces you use all the time, or would if it wasn’t covered in shit. Now you can dust the home and vacuum easily too!
No impulse purchases. Do you really want it, let alone need it? Discipline.
Get a filing cabinet if you don’t have one already for a job you do. Just a two drawer is enough.
I’ve thus far avoided feeling the need to host my own garage or yard sale, but that might be a good place to start if it’s feasible.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think Lemmy has a culture separate from Reddit or is it basically the same?English2·6 days agoWe already have scammers private messaging me here. They get nearly insta banned the minute I report one, but this is a small place.
Let’s say lemmy gets popular. I can’t see why bots wouldn’t be a plague here too.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube might slow down your videos if you block adsEnglish8·6 days agoTheir attacks are never a global rollout, you somehow dodged them all! Lucky.
Debate boards here just wouldn’t work out even with equivalent population. The OPs regularly delete their posts out of embarrassment. Religious debaters especially.
What a waste it’d be to put the effort into a debate only for the entire thread to get nuked out of existence because the OP can’t handle the responses. It’s annoying enough to just lose the OP arguments on reddit when they self delete. Here, everything is just gone.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do y'all recommend for new dishwashers?English7·7 days agoGet the base model of whatever the consensus on brand is generally. ALWAYS research though. They all wash dishes, usually the biggest problems people have with dishwashers is user error stuff. Like not knowing you need hot water at the sink first before starting the dishwasher. which pulls from hot water pipe, but the water in the pipe is not even warm yet by the time it stops calling for water if you just start it. Same with not adding dishwasher detergent to the pre wash cycle, adding too much detergent to the main cycle spring loaded container, not accounting for hard water streaking and failing to buy a streak/rinse aid, not cleaning the filters or door seals regularly, buying a shitty detergent and not trying others, etc.

The title maybe, unless that was a stylistic choice.
You’ll be fine for now so long as you’re not already a Person of Interest of a three letter agency.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What game changing item*s can you buy for $100 or less?English8·7 days agoJust the one since the time between buying this one and the previous is too many years to be relavant anymore.
Right now it’s the Cervical Pillow by HOMCA that I recommend 'cuz that’s what I got and I like it? Haha.
They look like this:

Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What game changing item*s can you buy for $100 or less?English281·7 days agoShoutouts to @[email protected] BUY BIDET NOW. Obligatory comment about wiping shit off your hands with dry paper goes here. Wash your ass. I have two bidets BTW
and I use Arch Linux BTW.Wall mounted soda can crusher. Recycling space saver.
Powered water fountain for cats. They instinctually prefer running water.
I bought the Swiss Army Knife of memory foam pillows that has sections on both ends for side sleeping, a dent in the middle with a neck support sticking out the bottom for support while stomach sleeping, and it works for sleeping on my back too. I don’t really have a discernable favorite position, so I love the multifunction pillows.
I have huge thigh muscles because I used to be fat and I just maintain them now. I like some fabric between my legs when out and about. Otherwise briefs would be fine. Still wouldn’t choose them over boxer briefs because I find the style more aesthetically pleasing too.
I did wear boxers in my teens and they’re fine. It’s a pretty weak favorable preference towards boxer briefs tbh but I only buy one kind for whatever reason lol.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Am I overreacting for wanting to quit driving altogether?English2·7 days agodespite never feeling safe or in control behind the wheel
I have anxiety and learning to drive was a temporary hell for me too. I don’t really have a choice unless I want to work at McDonalds until I die of old age. The career opportunities aren’t accessible without a car. That’s big empty Alberta with shite underfunded public transportation for you though.
If do you eventually have to drive, better not wait or the fear after that crash will cripple you the longer the gap is.
So the question is really whether or not you can get by without learning the skill. You do eventually gain confidence via practice. However yeah, there’s always inherent danger from you and any human sharing the road with you. Everyone will make mistakes. Some end very badly. Ultimately it’s your choice. You should know by now if you can potentially survive independently without a vehicle or not where you live.
This you can ignore if you don’t respond to everything new or scary in your life like you are with driving:
I had a friend who spoke like this all the time and she ended up being the living embodiment of Learned Helplessness. I could elaborate, but it’s a dreadful story and ends in a very early totally preventable death. I worry your loved ones are enabling you here by dealing with the hard stuff. The people you crashed into by your BF, and your dad for the aftermath.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon(s) as a kid?English3·7 days agoRare for me was Nickelodeon, or any premium cartoon channel really. I only saw their cartoons during free trials growing up. No Spongebob for me. I had Y-TV and PBS mainly. Some cartoons mirrored from Fox Kids. Stuff like that. I also had a nearby library. We did have Comedy Central.
Futurama was my favorite for sure.
Younger me loved Rupert, especially the mirror dimension episode.
Sixty@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon Doubles Prime Video Ads Per HourEnglish1·8 days agoI just use Stremio on everything now with the usual plugins and a debrid service sub. I could do it old school on mobile, but navigating Android is baseline a tedious slog even while knowing what I’m doing.
When video streaming first appeared on the internet, I basically stopped watching cable. I tolerate 0 ads and abuse video and streaming services until it’s impossible to do so and then I just won’t use those services anymore. It’s not sustainable to let me watch, acknowledged. I don’t care.
