  • Systematic answer: The Reddit commenter mindset. The medium of a link aggregator platform creates a dynamic where commenters receive an incentive to be the most punchy, the fastest, the most trenchant, the wittiest, the sharpest, the most meta, the most ironic. So people naturally overreach. They try to ring that bell extra hard, from a place that isn’t genuine. They end up seeming unfunny, mean, glib, or reactive, rather than genuinely witty or interesting.

Personal answer: wisdom tells us not to blame victims, so we know aggression says more about the aggressor. They might just be at a low level of personal development due to situational factors, or more profound deficits such as a personality disorder.

  • There’s a lot of money to be made destroying companies. Sophisticated financial instruments like swaps, leveraged buyouts, and death spiral financing can be used to vampirically destroy publicly traded companies. You buy a controlling share using debt, install a bunch of overpaid C-suite execs who sell all their shares and hire overpaid consultants to tell them useless shit, meanwhile the fundamentals of the business erode, corporate media goes negative on command while your hedge fund buddies short the shit out of it. Sooner or later the whole thing goes bankrupt and private equity buzzards swoop in to snap up whatever value remains.

I haven’t had coffee yet so this is not an essay, only a mild rant. I’m not gonna die on any of these hills right now, it’s my day off.

  • I just found out I’ve been confidently and secretly incorrect for decades. I always assumed it was “wheel barrel” and everyone was misspelling it because they were guessing based on everyone else’s poor enunciation.

I just checked and wheelbarrow is correct. Barrow is derived from old English, and might not actually be etymologically related to barrels at all. Not that I could find anyway.

What a life. What a strange old world.
