When I used iOS, background upload seemed to work okay. On both iOS and Android, though, I occasionally go into the app to manually backup since both like to kill background processes to save on battery life.

When I got into self-hosting, I was recommended Yunohost. I’m sure it’s great, but I couldn’t get it to boot, so I ended up using Debian. (which is what Yubohost is running under the hood I believe)

I remember someone telling me that CasaOS is very simple and could also be a good option, but I have no experience with trying to install it or using it.

Most of the self-hosting tutorials I found used either Debian or Ubuntu (a derivative of Debian), so using Debian or one of its derivatives could make it easier to figure out how to set up everything.

As some others have said, you could use a VPN like Tailscale to connect to your local network remotely. Alternatively, you could simply not deal with all the faff and only use your services locally, which is what I do with Nextcloud and Immich. Syncs when I get home but doesn’t when I’m not, and I can always use Tailscale to remotely access my server if there are any issues.

The cool thing about SyncThing is that it’s peer to peer, meaning you don’t need a central server for your files to sync. They can go between your laptop and phone, for example.

Something like Funkwhale does need a server, and to talk to that server outside your local network, you need a domain name.

Personally I use Joplin as it’s super customizable and I like sorting my notes in “notebook”. I am syncing my notes with Nextcloud, but you can also use anything that’s WebDAV, OneDrive (ew), or anything that uses S3 (like Backblaze)

Debian is great and is the backbone of my self-hosting setup too! :D

Aegis seems like a pretty good 2FA app on Android from what I’ve heard. Personally, I use Ente Auth as sync is very helpful when I don’t have my phone nearby (you can either use the desktop app or use your browser, both work). Don’t think you can self-host sync, though I might be wrong. Ente Auth also works without sync, so there’s that.

I would not suggest using a password manager’s 2FA integration (e.g. Bitwarden, I think Proton Pass has one if you use that?) as it kind of defeats the point of 2FA, since if someone got access to your password manager, they would also get the 2FA codes.

I have Joplin with Nextcloud sync. It works fine for me! It’s got a desktop app and a mobile app with, in my opinion, pretty good UI. Markdown support, syncing between devices, etc. are all there. You don’t need to connect to the network to view notes, a local copy is saved.

You could always group your feeds. I have mine grouped based on topic (news, science, technology, etc.) but I guess you could always group them based on political spectrum.
