A very big portion of How to Blow Up a Pipeline by Andreas Malm criticizes this study and how it ignores the more violent and property-destroying aspects of the movements it studied.
As Malm describes, the radical flank effect is a well-documented phenomenon in which the presence of a more militant faction in a social movement makes the authorities much more likely to compromise with the moderate elements.

I will not pretend that Francis’s hands are totally clean. He has mistreated abuse cases in the past. Around 2019 he actually started implementing some reforms that have to some extent helped. While I don’t think he did enough, he did much more than his predecessors. I highly suspect the next pope will be another Benedict and not another Francis. Consequently, I suspect that the mishandling will get worse.

For a very long time I followed the boycott and donated what I could. Genocide is atrocious, but what else could I do? I lived in the middle of bumfuck nowhere; There weren’t exactly any movements nearby I could get involved in.
I then saw a man from bumfuck nowhere drive all the way to the Israeli Embassy and burn himself alive. I realised there was a whole lot of things I could do.
I also moved to Ireland, so I got a lot more opportunities to act on my sentiments.

Burning yourself won’t stop Israel, sure. But it gets people involved. It got me involved.
My old family home got burgled back in high school. Some things of value were stolen, though luckily nothing sentimental.
What was worth more than the stolen money was that I no longer felt safe in my own home. I couldn’t sleep well for a long time after that. I felt like I was sleeping out in the open.
