So…those of you who have lived though things like this, realistically what can an individual do?

Loquat. Once you pick them they go bad after about 2 days. But they are sweet and can go with a lot of things.

It does very well in very hot climates like mine. Ive made preserves (canning + sugar). Ive also made fruit leather (kinda like fruit rollups) with a small amount of honey with them. They make for some good toppings and snacks for a good 2 months of the year.

Its funny because you can totally run good LLMs on local systems but people are just going to chat because its what they know and its easy to work with. Like I get it, but they are starting to put ads in the prompts now.

I actually agree. Others use chatgpt for just about everything. I dont like it for many…many reasons.

Google was much better pre-2020.

Google been degrading as time has gone on. The other search engines (like all of them) are getting or surpassing google in certain subjects. AI has really made them look like fools in all of this. Googles AI sucks for results and (while I dont like it) others are using chatgpt for search results.

So how would this work with the fediverse? Like we federate all content…its going to be VERY difficult to do anything if political content creators keep being told to take it down.

I’m not sure what you mean? I have voice, video and text working on my yunohost without any real issues. My wife and I use it all the time. Element (the client) could be a bit easier def on the initial experience, but to me that’s it.

The thing discord has is the people. When discord went down a couple of weeks ago, my tiny instance quadrupled in users. And the local city specific matrix got quite a few.

Tape drives are pretty good too. I worked at a few places where they still used them in case of disaster.

I’m just wondering as everyone likes to think of what they would do in a post-collapse society…when in reality these tiny drives will probably be much less useful than the knowledge on how to create electricity. Solar or otherwise. I like them though, and the article does an awesome job at stating what their purpose is. That’s great.

Solar has the issue that it’s hard to create the panels themselves, but there’s a plethora of ways to create and maintain electrical systems. A small wind generator could probably be easy to rig up as well.

Back when my state had power outages every other day for long periods of time, we found out what worked and what didn’t real quick.

Self hosting and open source to me is the most important part. Federation can come if the need arises. I was just curious.

I’m personally going to stay on my matrix channels as they seem more established. But it’s good to have options.

Right now discord seems fine but I’ve already lived through many de-platforming events. And one day it too will go the way of the dodo. People getting attached to nameless online services is funny.
