I think that’s the nicest way someone has ever said “touch grass” lol. I will agree though, losing access to Reddit made me realize how much mindless scrolling I would do on there. It’s difficult to see all of our comfy corners of the web crumble around us and not know what to do about it

I’ve tried Voyager and Memmy… I also know there are like a dozen others. My point still stands, we have too many devs spread out trying to make their own app/UI instead of us coming together to make one or two really good ones
I do too, ever since losing Apollo I’ve struggled to find something to fill that void. Ive tried various social media sites over the last couple of months but nothing has really stuck. Honestly not sure what to do or try at this point
I notice myself checking it less and less due to the post sorting algorithm being infuriating. E.g. I’m sorting by “Top 6 Hours” and this post from 7 months ago is in my feed
Edit: and since I’ve now commented on this post, it’ll likely bubble into other people’s feeds and they’ll be just as confused as I was
Hot take but all of the Lemmy/kbin apps. Instead of focusing dev time and resources on one or two open source apps we instead have a dozen half-baked pre-alpha apps. Lately it seems like I can’t go a day without seeing a post for a new Lemmy UI.

lohrun@fediverse.booto Technology@lemmy.world•Welp that answers a lot of why all .ml are downEnglish1·2 years agoI really appreciate the links! So it looks like matrix has mainly been focused on the chat room side of things and another downside is that you need some sort of translation layer to connect a matrix thing to an activity pub thing. Definitely gives a lot to think about. I’ve been trying to decide where I should donate my time to doing dev work at but the answer appears to be “it’s complicated”
lohrun@fediverse.booto Technology@lemmy.world•Welp that answers a lot of why all .ml are downEnglish3·2 years agoIt’s hard to make anything “official” on the fediverse as things are distributed. Who makes the “official” determination for Lemmy? The biggest instances? The devs? Do we hold a vote across instances?
lohrun@fediverse.booto Technology@lemmy.world•Welp that answers a lot of why all .ml are downEnglish1·2 years agoDo you know of any forum-like websites that use the matrix protocol?

Oh trust me, I understand there is something about watching their descent into madness. I wouldn’t be subscribed here if I didn’t want to see it. I was more pointing out that it’s like when people would Facebook stalk their ex. Like sure you aren’t interacting with them directly in any way but the only way to fully move on is to drop the morbid curiosity. (Again, I’m also subscribed here watching the dumpster fire)

Honestly I’ve heard more about spez and Reddit on the fediverse than I ever did on Reddit itself. The best way for us to move on is to actually move on.
lohrun@fediverse.booto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are there policies against insults but not against business advertising?19·2 years agoAny blatant ad spam I’ve seen I’ve banned, I haven’t seen much tech ad spam honestly though. The ad spam I’ve seen and banned was for a “luxury taxi service” and “beauty products.” If I wanted to see nonstop ads I’d just remove my ublock origin and rawdog the internet (which in fact I don’t wanna do)
lohrun@fediverse.booto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Youtube added shorts to the subscriptions page, pushing the subscriptions almost entirely off the page...English20·2 years agoI wish they would give us a user setting to completely hide shorts from ever showing. I have never watched a short and I will never watch a short. It’s just not the type of content for me. If I wanted TikTok style videos, I would download TikTok. It’s crazy how much stuff YouTube tries to cram down your throat even as a premium subscriber.
Edit: also just a great example of companies jumping on a bandwagon to make a quick buck. YouTube is a well established video hosting and streaming service, they didn’t need to spend how every many millions of dollars adding shorts (not that they would have bothered spending that money on the user/creator experiences anyways)
lohrun@fediverse.booto Technology@lemmy.world•DeArrow extension for YouTube that makes thumbnails bearableEnglish6·2 years agoI already pay for YouTube premium but that doesn’t change how creators make content. The YouTube algorithm and its mystery has really changed how people make content over the years. There have been people I’ve watched for 10+ years now and it’s sucks to see them have to chase the algorithm to maintain their livelihood. If I could pay a creator directly to get more content, I gladly would
lohrun@fediverse.booto Technology@lemmy.world•DeArrow extension for YouTube that makes thumbnails bearableEnglish11·2 years agoAt this point I’m down with paying a monthly subscription to a creator for content. I’ve never signed up for any creator’s pattern or anything because how the system is currently set up. I know some creators switched to posting less frequently because their more frequent posting appeared to be hurting their view count due to YouTube’s algorithm. I am so willing to pay a creator directly for them to go back to making more frequent content (and content they actually enjoy and not stuff just for views)
One of the problems with the fediverse is that each server keeps its own copy of the content. It is definitely a worry that bad actors push content to federated servers to get them taken down due to the content they now are storing.
