j4p@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Xi Jinping says no one can stop China’s ‘reunification’ with TaiwanEnglish351·6 months agoGet the sentiment, but just a friendly reminder that most Taiwanese people don’t love the “West Taiwan” meme as it props up the outdated idea that Taiwan wants to make a claim to China, when the vast majority are in favor of just being left alone. This isn’t two aggressors laying claim to each other, it’s one threatening the other.

Amazing design!!

j4p@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•TCL TVs will use films made with generative AI to push targeted adsEnglish16·7 months agoI have a TCL running Google TV that I use Flauncher on - a nice little FOSS lightweight launcher that I like a lot. However, I am only able to switch inputs (for gaming etc.) when using the default launcher. Anyone found a way around this? Pretty sure its a Google/TCL hardware thing and not due to any alt launcher just not wanting to include that
j4p@lemm.eeto Android@lemdro.id•The Google Pixel 7 and other older Pixels will now get two extra years of updates | TechRadarEnglish18·7 months agoPreviously, these phones were only promised three years of operating system updates, along with five years of security updates, the latter of which isn’t changing.
Seems like this adds roughly two years of OS updates but keeps the five years of security updates in place. For those of us on GrapheneOS I think we are reliant on the security updates so won’t be affected, but still overall good news!
j4p@lemm.eeto Games@lemmy.world•What are your favorite "gotta go in blind" games?English3·7 months agoWas gonna mention this one soooooo good
Right now I feel like its more that it’s a hypothetical, while the resource extraction of the AI hype is very real.
AGI itself won’t end us, but the land, water and energy needs of the massive data centers needed to scale up the computation needed for AI development sure are gonna try
More than Twitter. Less than Mastodon. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am hopefully as the original case was brought in 2017 under Trump, and his relationship with Big Tech is at best strained, but I truly don’t know what to expect moving forward.
j4p@lemm.eeto Games@lemmy.world•Steam is 'an unsafe place for teens and young adults': US senator warns Gabe Newell of 'more intense scrutiny' from the government if Valve doesn't take action against extremist contentEnglish323·8 months agoMe. There’s just an irony in pointing out the failure of Steam to effectively moderate (true) when Twitter has a much larger footprint, seems to be actively encouraging hate speech not just tolerating it, and is being rewardered for such behavior. The article points this out too:
There’s an aspect of irony to the complaint: Elon Musk turned Twitter into a haven for racism and far-right rhetoric, after all, and he’s being rewarded with a high seat in the incoming US government.
Senators only have so much time to pick and choose which issues to raise awareness about, so Steam seems like a weird fight to pick given the wider landscape ¯_(ツ)_/¯ . Could just be there’s a much higher chance of getting an actual change from Steam than a larger social media platform.

j4p@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•AI Expert Warns Crash Is Imminent As AI Improvements Hit Brick WallEnglish82·8 months agoSigh I hope LLMs get dropped from the AI bandwagon because I do think they have some really cool use cases and love just running my little local models. Cut government spending like a madman, write the next great American novel, or eliminate actual jobs are not those use cases.
j4p@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•As far as public support goes, why aren't disabilities and chronic illnesses treated in a similar manner to LGBT issues?13·2 years agoTotally fair, and I think that’s why allyship and solidarity are so important. I can’t speak to what it feels like to have a chronic disability, but I can amplify the voices of those who do and help to organize broader coalitions in support of accessibility.
j4p@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•As far as public support goes, why aren't disabilities and chronic illnesses treated in a similar manner to LGBT issues?371·2 years agoNo chronic illnesses and not LGBTQ here, so please correct me if I get anything wrong.
The reason many LGBTQ issues sees widespread support now wasn’t because governments and companies decided it was ok, it was because of decades of small battles and struggles that really accelerated into widespread acceptance throughout the 10’s, and to which we are already seeing a backlash in terms of the attacks on trans rights (just to note that acceptance is far from complete or just a constant journey in one direction).
Companies adopted pride not because they are allies but because it became more profitable to be pro-LGBTQ than against. Govs don’t work off profitability exactly, but public opinion shifted so far that Obama went from tepidly approving of civil unions to basically every mainstream democrat being pro-LGBTQ now. Even many Republican senators signed on to the Respect for Marriage Act in 2022.
I don’t have a lot of answers for why that doesn’t exist for people with chronic issues / disabilities yet. I’m sure there are many people working to advocate to make it so and I think we all have a responsibility to encourage accessibility as a right. I don’t think anyone saw the acceleration of pro-LGBTQ popular acceptance that was the 10’s coming, and I don’t think you can attribute it to one particular cause. The tough and unsatisfying answer is “it’s complicated,” but I hope that the example of LGBTQ progress can be a source of solidarity and support for advocating for accessibility.
From this article alone: suing the federal government over the birthright citizenship XO, instructing Chicago and Illinois law enforcement to not cooperate with federal ICE raids, having the CTA display ads on immigrants rights and connecting them to resources, hosting know your rights trainings, vet rumors of immigration raids and lay the groundwork for future legislation to counteract federal gov’s actions.
