Girlfriend moving in with me, her cat is an 8yo boy with a great personality (orange single brain cell) who easily gets overwhelmed by emotions ; he’s lived in an apartment with no way to get outside (just the stairs, 2nd floor) for the past four years, I have a garden, so he’s going to be in paradise now.

My cat is a 15+ senior lady who’s the chillest cat possible (she gets yelled at by birds 10 meters away from her, but keeps sleeping), but also quite social and extremely curious and interested in everything happening, she has the bad habit of requesting food when we cook, and also meowing loudly at night to let us know she’s here.

We’re going to try and get them along, its going to be challenging because they’ve always been used to be living alone (advice welcome !!).

We exchanged scents over the previous three weeks, she does not care at all. Meanwhile he’s surprised and automatically grows puffy (fur and tail) but does not feel threatened otherwise. We plugged in two Feliway diffusers in preparation.

He came in last Thursday and has stayed in the office room as his safe space, we visit him every now and then, and one of us sleeps with him at night. He’s scared by all the moving sounds happening, but wants to explore at night, he’s starting to want to go outside the office, and is curious about what’s on the other side of the door.

My cat immediately picked up there was something happening, and managed to get a glimpse of him as one of us was opening the door to check on him. She rushed to him to say hi, obviously he didn’t know how to react so he hissed defensively, she meowed back as if surprised why she provoked such reaction, then we separated them gently.

We’re planning to lock my cat out of the house during the day (she loves spending the day in the sun anyway), so that my gf’s cat can safely explore the house and get a feel of the layout.

This week we’ll start to feed them treats in each side of the door so they can associate pleasure with each other’s company and slowly remove barriers and see how they interact.

I think it will probably take at least 3 months for them to get along and especially him adjusting to his new home, hoping it all goes well!

French perspective here : Vermont sounds like one of the safest states to reside in, even in the current political climate of the US. You sound like you’re doing well financially so I wouldn’t worry for now, but maybe there are specific things that are making you reconsider, they’re valid.

France is hard to settle in, you need to be committed to learning the language and the culture. It’s very worth it but also takes time and energy, do consider that you’ll be an ocean away from your partner’s family, this might play in the long term.

If you do decide to come, I would recommend you wait until summer 2027 (presidential elections) to see how the political landscape looks like in France as well (trump-compatible-far-right has momentum currently), and make a decision based on this.
