How and why does his influence reach farther than so many others?English11·22 days agoI think a lot of it is that he spends much more strategically and with lots of strings attached. He also does a lot of work to basically indoctrinate folks who aren’t big players and fund them until they are - JD Vance being a prime example. He’s basically developed into a cult leader for rich wannabes and ends up owning their asses.

A lot of blues, soul, etc was created by folks who got their start in black gospel music, and used what they learned there in secular genres. Hugely influential in so many different types of music.

I mean Jackson was undoubtedly an asshole and believed in the institution of slavery (and I believe treated enslaved people inhumanely), but as far as I understood it, not for this in particular.

geekwithsoul@lemm.eeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Which actor did not have a single bad film?English93·3 months agoThe Man With One Red Shoe is much worse than Joe Versus the Volcano. And if made for TV movies count, you have to throw in Mazes and Monsters. Oh and Bonfire of the Vanities was a famous flop. And Volunteers was pretty bad. People forget how bad some of his early stuff was.
Hell, both Forrest Gump and Castaway were tremendously overrated. Also the unwatchable Cloud Atlas and the stupid Dan Brown movies.
<suddenly dawns on me that Tom Hanks makes a lot of bad movies>

“America’s financial dominance”?! Unless he has a time machine, not quite sure how that’s going to happen.

It went anti-woke insteadEnglish3·6 months agoI actually had that thought as well, and while they certainly might, I think they’re aiming more for the people who add “reddit” to a Google search when looking for answers.
geekwithsoul@lemm.eeto News@lemmy.world•A book app used AI to ‘roast’ its users. It went anti-woke insteadEnglish47·6 months agoEvery time I see a story like this, I’m always pretty sure it’s an AI that was trained on Reddit content.
One other thing I haven’t seen mentioned is selling ice cream is only a sustainable business for a few months out of the year in many places. Whereas you can sell burgers/dogs/etc year-round. But yeah, as far as I know they’ve always sold fast food - their burgers were a fave of mine when I was a kid in the 70s.
