Before I got privacy focused I have purchased few always online devices. While I try to replace those I still relay on few. To get my more private and secure I have setup additional network that has no access to my home network and I have blocked all outgoing traffic that wasn’t essential to the device.
Years ago I used to play tabletop RPG games. One time I met a guy and we became friends. We’ve seen each other on the weekly gaming sessions but every now and then he was unavailable due to other arrangements. At some point I learned he was spending some weekends with his disabled neighbor playing various card games and (pardon lack of specific language) some warhammer figure like strategies. I said I would like to be a part of those sessions and eventually we formed an unusual “fellowship”. Few years later when the disabled boy passed away, his mother said that these weekends were what kept him going.
I will be devil’s advocate in terms of Apple devices. I have an old iPad (5th gen), three years old iPhone and M1 iMac. All work perfectly fine. Apart from some latest features I can do anything I need/want.
As for the “smart” TVs, buy a store brand (most are dumb enough) or get a business display. In most cases is as dumb as is gets.
But if you want to “get off the grid” you will need to explore the Linux/FOSS world and spend a lot of time dealing with the usual drama - unusable laptop due to broken update/drivers, dealing with syncing data across devices, figuring out how to do things that work for everyone else.
I’m a devops engineer with a software engineer background. Apart from 9-5 and some personal projects, I don’t touch a computer. I spend my time tending my veggie garden, cooking and doing all kind of outside activities (running, archery, volunteering, laying on a beach with a good book).
When I was living in the Europe I truly enjoyed traveling to Italy and Spain and enjoy the siesta time. Basically few afternoon hours where just a time off, the world slowed down and you could take your time doing absolutely nothing.
For me it was a long process but eventually I got to the point where I fall asleep at the same time and I wake up at the same time. In other words I have a highly predictable sleep schedule. The downside is that I’m not able to sleep past my “wake time”.
Last but not least, learn to ski/snowboard. Best way to spend time outdoors. Also, develop a taste for a mulled wine.
I believe it boils down to the sense of community. You are surrounded by a similar thinking people and you can validate your views. Never been to one and I’m pretty sure I won’t be attending in the future.
Tomatoes are acidic, baking soda is alkaline, sugar is neutral. Adding baking soda to canned tomatoes will neutralize the acid but won’t change the taste too much (depending on the amount). Adding sugar won’t change the acidity of tomatoes but will greatly change the taste.
From my personal experience, adding sugar to a simmering tomato sauce for long enough that sugar caramelizes, will make the sauce way better.
I was born and raised in a country with four distinct seasons. I loved all the seasons. However, I have always been a winter person. One of my bucket list items is to live in a place where the sun sets for months and there is only one long winter night.
I would go back to my teen years just to relive it again. Assuming I could repeat the process when I read this post I would do it over and over again. I wouldn’t change anything, I would just enjoy the ride.
Pardon my French but it feels fucking awesome. I’ve been able to travel the world. I have developed hobbies that I wouldn’t be able to do so with kids. I have saved a lot of money and I have been able to advance my career.
As for passing my knowledge/experience, I volunteer at various charities where I can influence young minds. I don’t believe that passing on genes down the line is the best I can do. The best I can do is to help young people achieve their goals.
Now, to address few some clichés. On my deathbed I will get the glass of water from a highly paid nurse. The “warm bed” is not the issue for me. When I go I will leave my possessions to a charity of my choice.
Whatever rocks your boat. Until you’re not hurting anyone, commission away.
Let’s start with saying that the so called AI is not “intelligence”. It’s just a pretty advanced algorithm doing some “magic”. Behind the scenes it’s just a regular linear algebra equations dealing with bazillions of rows and columns feeded from the huge matrix. Modern mobile devices are capable of running “AI” models locally but it would cost a lot of power which would make a phone as unusable as Apple watch (aka charge it few times a day). So, the easy tasks like face id are done locally, more complex one (voice assistants) are outsourced to the cloud.
Everything that’s not meme, anime, manga, politics, sports, porn, dei related.
Fake does not change what actually happened
Seriously? You want to charge people just because the fake photo/video could have incriminate them? Welcome to the minority report…
It was the last day of my first year at the university. I had few hours before my ride arrived. And because I was a poor student I was doing everything to eat as cheap as possible. On the day of the move I had no breakfast as I assumed I can hold off until I get home. I was wrong. Luckily for me the place I lived in (it was some sort of a dorm) had a place to leave food that’s no longer needed. It wasn’t spoiled or expired, so everyone could grab something. Unfortunately one of the breads develop mold. I found about it after I was done with couple slices. Long story short, few hour drive home took half a day because I had to hit the bushes every 10 minutes.
