That verify email will come, but don’t expect a mountain of quality content once it does
doggle@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.world•Mark Cuban is ready to fund a TikTok alternative built on Bluesky's AT Protocol | TechCrunchEnglish91·6 months agoStupid. There are already alternatives. Nobody wants them.
No matter how good you make it, now that tiktok was taken from people any app will just be the tiktok replacement being forced on us instead of a worthwhile social media unto itself.
It’s not like twitter which sold its own soul and was subsequently run into the ground. I think any attempt to replace tiktok will just piss people off, especially if they’re clearly American corporate enterprises.

Unfortunately tipping less means wait staff are gonna get fucked – no way to soften that. We need to get to a place where their livelihoods aren’t dependent on generosity.

The prestige behind the thinkpad brand specifically predates lenovo. They bought it from IBM in '05. AFAIK they’ve always been seen as reliable, well built laptops, albeit a bit pricier.
As far as spyware, with win11 being what it is your options are install Linux or live with it no matter which manufacturer you go with.

Someone could unironically make a decent amount of money selling diy TV stupidification kits

The gun deals subreddit has occasional super cheap sales on assorted guns that work but nobody wants.
doggle@lemmy.dbzer0.comto News@lemmy.world•PlayStations for guns are offered up in New Orleans3·6 months agoPs5s are about $500 still iirc.
You can totally get a used hi-point for less than that. Shit you can get a brand new one for less than $500. Police trade-in glocks go for about $400-$450.
They’re not nice guns, but they definitely work. I think this buyback program may very quickly run out of money, and if anything it encourages people to buy guns they otherwise wouldn’t have just to trade them in.

Easier to control for variables with airplanes. It seems like a simpler (still hells difficult, but simpler) problem to solve, so them first I’d guess

Strong passwords/keys, etc. A VPN itself can be a potential security risk, as if it’s compromised an attacker can tunnel traffic directly into a network straight past a firewall.
The risks can definitely be mitigated, but if someone’s asking for an ELI5 on KVMs, then it may be best to stay away until they have a better understanding of IT infrastructure altogether.
doggle@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•JetKVM's Source Code is now public! ✨English8·6 months agoELI5:
It lets you remotely control a computer.
It’s different (arguably better) than remote connection software because it is a separate device that basically just forwards your keyboard & mouse inputs. This means that you can control the remote device even if it’s powered off or not able to boot properly, and you can configure the BIOS remotely too.
You could call someone on-site to connect the KVM to a server, but KVMs, while expensive by regular person standards, are pretty cheap as enterprise hardware goes. So some organizations just keep separate KVMs plugged into all critical hardware all the time.
Worth noting here that KVMs are potentially a quite high security risk.
Their website is probably light on details because “KVM” is fairly common industry parlance. If you normally work with this stuff then just hearing those 3 letters tells you most of what you need to know.
Edit: high, not Hugh

My best guess is that he was about to be fired anyway and Kemp didn’t want him to get away with acting like it was on his own terms. It would be good to hear a lawyer’s take on it, though.

If I’m not mistaken the overwhelming majority of elons wealth is in company stock (including his other companies, not just Tesla)
It might need to fall pretty damn low for him to be able to afford all outstanding shares.
