I don’t know of such an alternative. A quick solution would be to use something like GeoNotes to take geolocated notes.
As far as a self-hosted solution goes, I’d just like to point out that you wouldn’t need a self-hosted database of places. You could query Ouverture (or Google, OSM, etc.) for places near you, and you’d just need to store the check-in on your server with a basic API. This is an interesting problem, and not super hard to implement.

It really depends on your approach to learning things. If you’re looking for a systematic approach, I really like No Starch Press books for that sort of thing: How Linux Works or Your Linux Toolbox (for a more playful approach).
But in the end there’s really no substitute for installing Debian on bare metal and tinkering with it. I would really recommend Debian, because it’s the archetype of how Linux systems have been working for the last 30 years or so. Arguably, this is currently changing, but come to grips with Debian before you dabble in more modern approaches to system management.

It’s a coup. They are currently rewriting the rules of how things are done.
The way things are going, the next “vote” you’ll get is to ratify the new and improved constitution. I’ve actually seen a couple of coups first hand, that’s usually how it goes.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s terrible that they were granted access to very sensitive information (government contracts, employee data, probably tax returns last I heard) with no oversight. That’s gone, no way back.
But make no mistake, this is not a heist. It’s a coup. They are seizing control of meta-infrastructures of the government: payroll, contracts, payments, communications, software. This is how you hold a country hostage.
