Ah, I had been thinking that the parent would decide. But of course, how naive of me lol
This is kinda genius
I’ve actually done a little to combat this, in my personal life (apart from ordinary privacy stuff like librewolf und Linux). I got so sick of the majority of my friends expecting me to reply to every text message within 30 minutes, and then getting extremely offended when I didn’t (simply because I don’t look at my phone that often), that I turned off read-receipts on all my messaging apps, and set my notifications to only arrive in groups at specific times of day.
Then I made a habit of not answering unimportant messages for a few days, until I got the reputation that I pretty much don’t use my phone (I also don’t use conventional social media, and none of my friends even know I’m in lemmy). This worked like a charm! My social life much, much less stressful.
I’ve broken the absurd contract that so many people seem to think they have a right to. My time is now my own. I can highly recommend this system! Of course, I can’t do it for work-related stuff, but it still really has reduced my stress by a lot.
I’m traveling right now, but will get back to you on my playlist generator.
I hadn’t thought of syncing music libraries! You are indeed right, MPD does not have that, and it would be a hassle to set up. One point to apple…
MPD works pretty well for the music thing, and, I don’t know if this is would be an option for you, but I programmed my own smart-paylist-generator in rust as a hobby project to get control of my 500Gb (around 10,000 100% legally acquired tracks cough, cough) library. The additional control over the algo meant I got something that works waaaay better than pretty much anything else I’ve tried (including Spotify suggestions, etc. — the only thing I still use is Bandcamp for new artist suggestions); if you have the time, I highly recommend a homemade solution like that. It is a lot of work though.
You wouldn’t mind elaborating on “of course things are so simple”? It feels like an awfully vague answer…
Literally the only social media I use (apart from signal, if that counts).
Lol, there’s even a warning. The first one I saw was fucking hilarious, thanks for the recommendation!
Scared to click, someone pls provide context

This is very real and has been an issue for years. I remember when I was younger, watching public TV, and I saw a news report about an elderly lady who was forced to sell her home along with the rest of her village so that they could dig up the entire area for coal. At the time it was a big deal, because she took so long to agree, which got media attention. It was incredibly depressing. It felt dystopian.
I’m oddly happy that, despite what some might call extravagant ideas, you stand by LGBTQ. Goes against the stereotype, and I can only support that. As a side note: the only “extravagant idea” (who am I to say; you can’t disprove a negative — in other words, I mean no disrespect) I’ve ever gotten interested in was Philip K. Dick. You may find his VALIS series interesting; it’s the most persuasive argument for omniscient non-human intelligence I’ve come across, and quite well written at that.
This is a much, much better article. I’m surprised at the NYPost’s shoddy quality (though I don’t know much about them); the headline especially feels misleading. Thanks for sharing a better source.
I’ve seen this happen to you multiple times now (in the same day!) — I officially feel sorry for you now.
Also shout-out to airwindows. Absolutely fantastic plugin collection, and entirely free!!!
Edit: also, while I’m at it, Orca is a great, though very weird, sequencer.
I almost disagree with this.
IMO Reaper is fantastic and simply a better drop-in replacement for audacity. Audacity—despite the wonderful name, second only to Alacritty (maybe the greatest program name ever)—is wildly difficult to use, buggy as all hell, and insanely inefficient. Reaper, on the other hand, works for simple things and for complex synthesizer and wacky editing stuff perfectly. I still remember how surprised and bemused I was that the Electro-Akustik department in the Akademie der Künste in Berlin uses basically-free Reaper for their recording needs.
The only argument for audacity is the slightly faster start-up time, and the absence of a “buy-me” pop-up (if you haven’t purchased one of the very affordable licenses). Seriously though, since I discovered Reaper I’ve basically used it for everything not related to work et al. Fantastic software.
Audacity is decent, but Reaper is sooooooooooooooooooooooo much better. Sooooooooooooooooooooooo much. And it’s basically free (presuming you’re not a business).
My office forces everyone to use Microsoft (there’s a lot of Mac and Windows users), and whenever I complain, people get pissed at me. God knows why.
As for SystemD, I think a lot of people think it’s fine and people like me are exaggerating. I guess that’s fine, but non-systemD systems (Void Linux being my favorite) are so much faster, it’s unbelievable.
And then there’s a lot of generic language programmers and business owners, who are very willing to defend their income source. Like everyone I know. (I’m really dying here; I gotta find a cool Rust or LISP company)
As for uBO, it’s a “progress” thing. If using masses of third parties and trackers makes stuff more innovative (not to mention laggy), then it’s good, they claim.
I’m happy to hear that Lemmy shares my opinion though, that’s a little comforting :)
I am so fucking angry. Fuck Alabama.
