  • There’s always the exceptions, but they’re rare, and getting more rare.

The vast majority of works are owned by a few major corporations, even smaller, more indie games often get published through a major studio, which then retains a good amount of the profit. Almost all media, TV and movies, is owned by one of a handful of companies. Music is largely the same.

It goes the same way for so many other things too. It’s not just games and media.

There are always going to be exceptions but on the whole, it’s vastly more likely/common that the people profiting from something is a large, faceless organization, which only answers to their shareholders.

  • Yeah, why the fuck not?

Obviously, something made in a specialized vehicle manufacturing plant will be better/more durable/whatever, but given the option between downloading a car vs spending a year’s salary to buy one… I’d rather download one.

Unless my wages get better (which they are not) or cars get cheaper (which they won’t), I’ll continue to have this opinion.

There’s a nontrivial number of cars that cost more than a house did in the 80’s and 90’s. So it’s entirely possible for someone to spend the same dollar value on their home, when purchasing it in the 90’s, as they do 25 years later, buying a house in the 2020’s.

    Stupid.

  • Canada. It’s generally easy and free (no direct cost to me). I try to avoid having to go to my doctor whenever possible and I live with a nurse (and my doc knows that). Usually when I send him a message, either by email or by calling, he’ll have a follow up question or two (sometimes none) then decide a course of action and move right to implementation. Sometimes that’s sending a script to my local pharmacy, sometimes that’s a referral to a specialist. Who knows? I haven’t seen the guy in years. But if he made the request for me to go in, I would without hesitation.

I know my experience isn’t the same as others, since my doctor and my spouse have actually worked together; but still. It’s all free and there’s usually minimal waiting.

The only significant delays I’ve heard of in Canadian healthcare relate to major procedures when the issue is non-critical. Like getting an MRI as a precaution, to make sure things aren’t messed up or something (IDK what MRIs are used to diagnose, I am not a doctor).

Everything is triaged, so if you’re not actively dying from a thing, and you need a big piece of equipment to scan you to figure something out, you’re going to be waiting a while.

  • I get what you’re trying to say, but by saying it, you’ve demonstrated a significant misunderstanding of what it’s like to live with depression and suicidal ideation.

As simply as I can: I wouldn’t assume that she wasn’t seeking mental health help when she ended her own life. Just because she was successful in removing her own life, does not mean she wasn’t trying to save herself from that outcome.

Intellectually, the above statement is contradictory, if she didn’t want to die, then why did she end her own life? That, is the very nature of suicidal ideation and depression. You can’t intellectually ponder it out of existence, and you can want to live while still having suicidal urges that are hard to control.

This isn’t a logic problem. Intellectual reasoning doesn’t have a place in the discussion. The cognitive therapy you get from a mental health professional often needs to be paired with anti-depressants to mitigate the negative thoughts while you sort of work on rewiring how you think about the things that are causing you to feel depressed. Whether those things are internal thoughts, or comments from external sources…

Depression is a demon that isn’t easy to overcome.

By saying she should have just gotten therapy trivializes the struggle that some people go through every day, so I would expect some down votes for your comment. I understand that your comment is meant to be helpful and coming from a place of caring, but it does not come across that way.

I’ll add a disclaimer: all of the thoughts and ideas expressed here have no scientific, nor medical basis, I am not a doctor. These are from my own personal experiences and research, and have no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I may be wrong and if I am, I hope any readers will comment to let me know that I have erred.

A final note: to anyone struggling with mental health: I hope you get the help and support you need to overcome any struggles you may be experiencing. I sincerely hope you can find a path towards mental health that works for you.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

  • My general rule of thumb is this:

Is this activity threatening to harm the lives, health, or well-being of anyone? Is this activity going to infringe on anyone else’s inalienable human rights (to live, bodily autonomy, to exist without constant fear… Stuff like that)?

If the answers to both of these is a concrete “no” then I do nothing. I mind my own goddamned business and move along.

If someone is doing something that can and likely will end up with someone seriously hurt or dead, then yeah, I’ll call and let someone know. Hopefully they can do something before anyone is seriously harmed. If one civilian is being mentally or physically abused by another, and I’m not in a position to intervene in a productive manner, then yeah, I’ll call for that too.

If nobody is getting harmed, either mentally, physically, or financially, then I couldn’t give any fewer shits. It’s illegal? That’s nice. The law can only be enforced if people who are tasked with enforcing it, take action. If they’re not here, I don’t feel any obligation to rat out someone who I don’t know anything about. Maybe they’re destitute because capitalism, or they’re down on their luck, or something… They have a whole life story that I have absolutely no knowledge of.

Also, I don’t consider corporations to be people (despite what the law might say), and if there’s material/financial harm to a corpo, it would be impossible for me to give any less of a shit that whatever is happening, is happening. Whether theft, or destruction of property, or whatever… No shit will be given for your corpo overlords and/or shareholders. You all can get fucked. So if someone is stealing from… Idk, Wal-Mart? And I saw that happen… Then I didn’t see anything officer. I don’t know what you’re talking about. That is an innocent person who has done nothing wrong. Where did they get the Walmart store-brand thing that they didn’t pay for? I’m not sure, they probably had it with them before entering the store. I certainly didn’t see them take anything that they shouldn’t have.

Don’t be a rat. Mind your own business; as long as nobody is getting hurt… and if someone is getting hurt, do everything in your power to resolve the situation before resorting to a call to the police. It’s actually really simple.

  • Well, the feds did it to themselves. Rather than focusing on the crime of murder, they focused on the victim, who is completely unrelatable, and generally disliked, then they focused on the motive, which they presented in the context of “it was pre-meditated!” And everyone just saw a very relatable person in the accused and collectively we all kind of went “mood” … So I’m not sure what they expected, but that CEO guy that’s not important enough to remember the name of, who died, is not the victim here.

The victims are all the people that were denied while CEO guy was in charge, denied by the policies he put in place, promoted, demanded that people enforce, or any of the above… Luigi is just the latest in a long line of victims that this guy has caused suffering to.
