Justathroughdaway@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do many Americans seem to racially stereotype other Americans solely based on their appearance?2·1 month agoThis isn’t just an American thing. People get stereotyped all over the world. I’ve experienced a lot of it myself as a racially ambiguous person in New Zealand, Britain, Australia and America. Anywhere where people can tell the difference between different types of people people will start stereotyping and categorising.
As I’ve already brought up I’m pretty much an ethnic chameleon. Throughout my time I’ve been mistaken for a Latina, a black girl, an Arab, a dark skinned Asian and an Indian so I do have experience with what it’s like to be perceived as different groups. I’ve even been mistaken by other people in those groups.
When I was perceived as Asian I was very fetishized. A lot of people assumed I was a prostitute of some sort or a mail order bride. Same as Latina. Latin people are very fetishized so I would meet a lot of guys desperate to make their Latina fantasy come true. Some even asked me to speak in a Spanish accent for them. It was cringe but I had to take what I could get. /°~°/ When people thought of me as an Arab they would ask me why I wasn’t wearing a hijab or acting like a typical Muslim. As if all Arabs are Muslims. If not that then they would give me speeches about how hard it must be to be a liberated woman. There was also a brief time I cut my hair short for a play I was in and people through I was a lesbian so they would ask me questions about ‘what was it like to be a Muslim lesbian’ and ‘if my parents still talked to me’.
I see where you’re coming from. In America it isn’t necessarily racial hatred more just tribalism. As someone who doesn’t belong to one group this is very inconvenient to say the least. It’s better in other countries like Australia or Britian. Over there I was never singled out for having dark skin or for not being visibly white.

Justathroughdaway@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•New Zealand passes record suspension of lawmakers over hakaEnglish310·1 month agoGovernments change agreements all the time. There is nothing illegal or unlawful about that. Whether you agree with it or not isn’t the point. Just because somebody does something you disagree with doesn’t give you the right to throw a fit about it.
Justathroughdaway@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•New Zealand passes record suspension of lawmakers over hakaEnglish411·1 month agoNo it isn’t. If this was on the street then it would be fine but this was a place of law and order where if you don’t like something you talk about it like an adult. It was totally unprofessional and performative.

Justathroughdaway@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•New Zealand passes record suspension of lawmakers over hakaEnglish49·1 month agoAs someone who is half-Maori this just embarrasses me. I don’t have a problem with people celebrating their heritage and culture just do it in a more appropriate time and place. I wouldn’t have a problem with Irish people celebrating the Saint Patrick’s Day just as long as they don’t do it during a meeting at parliament.

Butt ones as this isn’t Australia, lol. It wasn’t until I was older myself I realized that thong had a different meaning around the world. I remember as a kid taking trips to Australia people used to always call things “thongs” and thought anything of it. As a New Zealander they’ll always be Jandals to me.
That’s oddly sweet.
Yeah sure dude, you totally did it cuz it was funny.
Same here. There not my favourite but there not as bad as people make them out to be. I mostly wear them as men like them. I did a music video a few years back as a backup dancer and I woar one underneath some sweatpants. Maybe it’s because I have histrionic personality disorder but I like to look sexy. Not like a hooker or a stripper but more in a seductive way like a belly dancer or a show girl.
. Argentina, bog standard three stripes and something in the middle design no different from El Salvador’s, Guatemala and Honduras’s.
. Canada, same as the Argentinian flag but worse because of its use of a leaf. By far the cringiest flag.
. Japan, it’s just mid.
