Awesome, glad to see we’ve updated to the new Lemmy-UI features, the banned badges and vote-view for moderators in Lemmy-UI will be a great improvement (for people worried that mods can now view votes, they always could via the API since 0.19.4, this is only a Lemmy-UI change).

While we haven’t updated our backend to a newer version yet, as we still have to find a solution for dealing with the newly integrated functionality to send emails on rejected registration applications

I’m curious why this is an issue, could you maybe please elaborate? I thought this was generally a good change since it increases transparency of moderation and lets people know if and when they were denied, and potentially for what reason too. Good to know in case they made a mistake or would like to appeal.

Glad to see there’s effort being taken to stop this, as someone who’s been harassed in a similar way on here it really kind of bugs me that people are making light of this or assume that the original person is the one doing this. Impersonation is frighteningly easy on the Fediverse and I really wish they’d add some kind of verification in Lemmy like they do in Mastodon to try and minimize the impact of it.

You should also add secretly whitelisted Facebook trackers in their adblocker, something they did a while back.

Yikes I didn’t know they did that but I’m not surprised. There’s a reason the people behind Tor say it should only be used via the official Tor browser, because only the Tor browser can provide that level of protection against those kind s of leaks, as well as much better fingerprinting resistance than chromium-based brave is going to give you.

Don’t forget about the fact that a while back they secretly whitelisted Facebook trackers in their adblocker to “make pages run more smoothly” they got a lot of shit for it when people found out looking through the source code. When I heard that they did that it basically cemented in my mind that they were shady and untrustworthy, that’s in addition to the Crypto and rewards stuff.

See guys, I know people didn’t believe me when I said there are people who push for and encourage for projects to be corporatized instead of community run but here is one of them. These types of garbage arguments always bring up the idea of cybersecurity but always neglect to mention one of the biggest security and privacy threats to the corporate governed model, the corporation itself. Especially once enshittification really sets in.

And before you vomit some horrible misrepresenting argument reminiscent of Dave Plumber’s speech against backdoors in Windows, you know damn well that when I say the company itself is a privacy and security threat to the project that I’m talking about deliberate attempts by the company to make money off the project through tracking, ads, crypto mining, and any other number of shady shit. You know, things that are officially sanctioned.

Would need to be one that restricts participation of the other party, Lemmy blocks are useless in that regard. Otherwise you’re not doing anything to deal with network effect just pretending those spaces don’t exist. Something only useful for snowflakes with weak emotions, and not people who want to make a difference.

In order for that to work there needs to be effort taken to curb persistent network effect like the utterly monolithic communities on lemmy.ml. When there isn’t any, they just get bigger and stronger. That isn’t something you can do by starting new instances, it has to be done by ones with a big slice of the pie, something new instances never have unless started just after the collapse of an existing one.

It happened that way with Beehaw. Beehaw used to be in the same position as lemmy.ml with some of their communities. But they decided to knee jerk defederate us and sh.itjust.works because we’re big. They stopped being the de-facto communities not just for us here but almost anywhere else. Defederation does curb this kind of network effect, and quickly too, especially when it causes the less active ones to inflate like crazy.

We would adapt, just like when Beehaw was a significant amount of the userbase on Lemmy and they cut us and sh.itjust.works off, we adapted and they got smaller. Lemmy.world is a bigger server than lemmy.ml. Only reason their communities are still so big is network effect. Which would be curbed by them being cut off. As I’ve said already, network effect is curbed by force, taking away a choice, not providing 7 more choices while leaving the original.

I think things like this can be helpful at curbing network effect. Which can only be really curbed by force. Beehaw used to have quite strong network effect in some communities too in the earlier days, but now, they have much less of a vice, and are actually much quieter than they were before.

Might be a good idea to check out !de_ml@lemmy.blahaj.zone in these trying times. In case it’s a while before the issue is fixed.

It’s not cut all the way through, the skin is more opaque than the meat inside so if you cut shallow cuts in the skin the light will shine through the parts you cut away the skin on.

I would encourage that, but if your instance doesn’t defederate them you may have to go a bit farther since you’ll still get replies from lemmy.ml users, as users are not blocked as part of this functionality. And that is by design, it’s not meant to act as a replacement or alternative to defederation, it’s meant to act as an alternative to blocking all communities on an instance.

For Twitter it really doesn’t make sense because it has become undebatably a “Nazi bar”, metaphorically since they aren’t an actual bar, but they still support and tolerate Nazis (and other manners of horrible people). Some people insist that it isn’t and there are “normal level headed people there” but that doesn’t matter, it’s still a Nazi bar, because it accepts and tolerates Nazis. How can someone expect to not be judged for going to and hanging out in a place like that?

Some of their communities are also insanely aggressive compared to their .world counterparts, both in spirit and moderation. Really best to stay away from them, if at all possible.

I’m in a few but as a general rule I try to avoid most of the ml instance communities because some of them can be a bit on the toxic side.

Generally I stick with the ones that are on the same server as my account i.e. !linux@lemmy.world on my lemmy.world account and !linux@programming.dev on my programming.dev account with exceptions to ones where I don’t have presence on that instance, or I have limited purpose of having an account there (i.e. my lemmy.blahaj.zone account only serves to moderate the Aroace and Agender communities), in which case I usually choose the one which has been most reliable. Part of the reason I did it this way was because in the early days when Lemmy.world had load issues and was being DDoSed federation would have a lot of issues,

Well right wingers want to ban books and services like IA make that harder since they provide easy access to download or digitally borrow those books. It makes it harder for them to deny people access to those books since they can find them online. Of course, there are other ways people can still obtain those books, IA isn’t the only one, but it’s the easiest and the most convent.

They don’t actually care about life, they just don’t want women to have control over their bodies.
