I’m genuinely both surprised and excited that this ended up being two women.

Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•TOR asking to run snowflake to help Iranians with internet accessEnglish2·11 days agoWelp.
I watched several videos in addition to those and feel both better and not, I do understand the simplified analogies in the linked stuff, and they are helpful, as were some of the related content.
I kinda sorta understand the technical stuff, sort of. I’m not in a tech field or anything…
I’m going to keep it there regardless of the negative hype because you never know when I’ll need others to do the same. Im not doing anything wrong so it’s whatever.
I’m up to 10 :)
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•TOR asking to run snowflake to help Iranians with internet accessEnglish13·12 days agoThanks for this!
Well I spent the time between when I posted and when you replied looking into various things related to tor, legality, and snowflake more specifically, as well as a bit after your reply since you gave me a couple extra things to look into… (like if there’s a risk of running alongside self-host software like Plex and jellyfin, I didn’t find anything about it so I sort of assume it’s fine…?)…
I didn’t see anything overly bad other than if you yourself use tor, maybe, so took the plunge and… have had a whole two connections already, so yay, I’m a snowflake!
I feel slightly better about myself, like when I started using BOINC crowdsource computing for research in the early noughties. :)
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•TOR asking to run snowflake to help Iranians with internet accessEnglish21·12 days agoI’m willing to do this but frankly tor intimidates me big time. I don’t know anything about it other than……. Yep that’s it.
I read through the mastodon post, and the project page, and cumulatively I didn’t get any answers that, like, make me feel better.
I assume this is a dark web node sort of thing? Is it safe for me to run the browser extension (idk shit about docker and don’t really want to learn rn), like I’m not putting a target on myself or anything? If yes to question 1, but no to question 2, what does put a target?
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.world•The bizarre, dismal page you see if you open YouTube without an account.English4·13 days agoThis is always what my YouTube homepage looks like because I only access it in ghostery browser, using a ghost tab by default (like incognito/private/inprivate, but because ghostery, also blocks tracking, cookies, etc.)
I typically completely close the browser between links (it’s my default link handling browser for Lemmy), so it gets reset frequently enough to have nothing on home if I actually navigate there.

Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto News@lemmy.world•Earth's atmosphere hasn't had this much CO2 in millions of yearsEnglish5·29 days agoI saw a depressing comic like that… civilization has collapsed, no humans left, and the invisible hand of the market keeps raising prices.
I tried to find it for you but there are a lot of invisible hand of the market comics and I’m not good enough to find it :(
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you spread an infectious disease via the internet?English3·29 days agoNeed to throw in some viral stupidity like licking toilet seats and tampering with food and stuff.

(Wish I were joking, but this is all facts)
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is reportedly training humanoid robots to deliver packagesEnglish6·1 month agoStop redirecting them. Make it cost them.
Tell your neighbors to file an “it arrived late” or “it didn’t arrive” complaint. Get two and send one back. Their fault for being shit companies.
If something is delivered to you by mistake, it’s not your responsibility to fix the mistake, you just got free stuff.
If it goes through USPS, it might be a federal offense to open stuff delivered via USPS, but is that true of third party parcel delivery? Almost certainly not, because USPS is a government org and those third party shit delivery companies aren’t…
So now any package that’s delivered to me by anyone other than USPS… it’s mine now, and I open it to see if I want whatever trash my neighbors are buying.
I used to try to fix the problem… but then I realized it’s NOT MY PROBLEM.
I murmur and make weird noises, and I’m usually somewhat aware when I make noises. Happens when I’m falling asleep, mostly. But sometimes I do mutter stuff, I’ve been told. Wouldn’t surprise me. Apparently it’s not really words though.
My sister, idk if she still does, used to sit up and have full conversations with people while she was asleep. They made absolutely no sense but that’s the only way you knew she was asleep. Apparently that runs in the family along with other weird sleep quirks (like my grandma sleeping with her eyes open).
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you were the CEO of a small game development company would company field trips be a good thing?English6·1 month agoThing is, that isn’t fun for everyone. Especially with activities chosen for you, it could be quite the opposite of fun. I’ve been subjected to “mandatory fun days” many times, and all of them have sucked hard for at least one person there (not always me, but they are always a massive waste of time for me).
I don’t actually want to be friends with my coworkers (friendly, yes; friends, no); it’s nice to have totally separate groups. No drama bleed, and people leave me alone so I can get my work done. Most jobs I’ve had, I don’t like my coworkers enough to be around them outside of job tasks, and I don’t have to. We are there to work, we didn’t choose the people we work with, and I’m not interested in using my job to replace my social life, especially since I typically have vanishingly little in common with the people with whom I work. We talk professionally about work stuff and that’s it.
Plus the work doesn’t vanish on this “day off”. It just means you have more to do the next day like any other day off, but you didn’t even get to do your own thing to cause that extra workload. Hard pass.
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Son received an expensive gift from his new best friend, should I ask him to return it?English6·1 month agoStuff like this is why I have a rule with my friends, because we are all varying levels of broke at various times.
Whomever suggests going out (typically no more than 3 people) must be fully prepared to cover the costs of everyone being invited. They usually don’t have to do so, but it ensures that nobody feels awkward because they can’t afford to go.
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you using a specific alarm ringtone, if yes which one?English2·1 month agoI use the great fairy fountain from old school Zelda (ocarina of time specifically) as my wake up alarm, as it’s very peaceful to wake to. But still nerdy. It went with Navi going “hey listen!” Every time I got a text ;)
Mostly I use my watch alarm tho, which is vibration that starts gentle and gets stronger, and that’s plenty.
If I get shocked awake I have a panic attack. I try to avoid that.
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the oldest thing you own that you still use daily?English3·1 month agoI have a washcloth I got when I was like 6… I’m almost 40. It’s a really nice mesh washcloth and somehow it only has one extra hole that shouldn’t be there, as well as a seam for the edging that needs to be fixed.
I’ve used it almost daily for my face that whole time.
But the oldest thing I have that I sort of technically use is a wheelchair from WWI. It functions as a chair in my living room. I don’t really think it counts, being furniture, though.
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Funny: Home of the Haha@lemmy.world•Character creationEnglish3·1 month agoWhenever I go on a road trip to a state not bordering Wisconsin, I buy a couple cases.
I can usually trade them at another brewery, often netting far more than I bring.
What’s funny is new glarus beer isn’t even that good compared to some of the other breweries in the state, it’s just exclusive and well marketed.
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto News@lemmy.world•Passenger jet had to abort takeoff to avoid runway collision at New York's LaGuardia AirportEnglish3·2 months agotime to bunker down extra hard
Is this a typo/autocorrect or an eggcorn? I really like bunker down as an eggcorn, because it makes good sense, so I hope that’s what it is (the phrase is supposed to be hunker down). :)
Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.world•Avoiding AI is hard – but our freedom to opt out must be protectedEnglish2·2 months agoOh shit lineage was cyanogen? I used that back in the day and loved it!
I’ll keep that in mind, thanks for the tidbit!
I’ve tried really hard, and sampled many brands, but other than soy in lattes sometimes, I can’t stand plant based milk in my coffee. Some of it is fine stuff for other uses, or even just drinking, but it just doesn’t come close to the flavor I like as part of my wake up routine. And if my coffee isn’t good it sours my whole day, just a bit.
I’d love to have something that tastes like milk and feels like milk and does the job of milk, but is vegan.
