This one resonates with me. I fucking love science fiction, and when they forced me to read The Giver, the closest they every got to science fiction, I actually enjoyed it. And then the rest of the time I hated it all.
If I had actually been given the chance to read some good science fiction, I would have been reading a lot more as a kid.

Just finished them instead of reading them right now, but “The Left Hand of Darkness” and “The Dispossessed” by Ursula K. Le Guin. I liked the world building of the first far better, but it didn’t hit at the politics I wanted to read about as much as I wanted, the second being the opposite.
I don’t know why, but I just need content wrapped in sci-fi for me to find it enjoyable, and “The Dispossessed” in particular was what I was looking for, an exploration of anarchism grounded in examples and thought experiment.
Both of them are fantastic books, and definitely worth a read for anybody interested in science fiction, sexuality & gender, and anarchism.

This happens every other day when working with Blazor. As an added bonus, it can never decide on spacing and will constantly change it.
Probably a symptom of using legacy code and modern code at the same time, but good god the settings for everything are in a million places.

Even Lemmy isn’t magically immune. If the admins of .world got handed checks for a couple million dollars in exchange for the rights to operate the servers, what would discourage them from cashing out?
Nothing, but it would be far less disastrous than say some billionaire buying the town square of the internet.
Because it’s federated, everyone can just leave. There is nothing stopping people from ditching .world and moving on.
It is open source. But from what I can tell the accounts are largely still hosted centrally, and it isnt federated in any way, which isn’t great. Anybody can host an instance or server.
So ultimately it looks like a massive step up from Discord, with some small issues here and there.

I have never had any of my MC servers run without a whitelist, even the one I had publicly listed on planet minecraft back in the day. You should know who has access to your machines on some level.
It also allows the game to revive itself. Those 40 players playing pirated WoW could introduce more people to the game. And at the very least, it allows it be run in the future if ever historians should need access.
